Why is Carly your best friend?

Anonymous

(mini essay time!)

You know how with internet relationships, they can be so much stronger than relationships in real life? On the internet, that barrier of pre-judging doesn’t exist. You get to know a person for who they are-their obsessions, their quirks, their style and tastes for things-not what they are. What they are is their clothes, their outer self, typically not their real personality. Sure, someone on the internet may post a picture of themselves and you judge from that. But then you become more interested in them and get to know all their little quirks that make up their true person.

You can learn so much about a person from the internet-their fandoms, music tastes, inner thoughts even. From learning all the little details, no matter how miniscule and insignificant, you gain a bond. This bond, a bond of common interests and shared feelings, is so incredibly powerful. I’m talking Unbreakable Vow powerful here. This bond becomes the embers of your friendship, if you will. The embers start the fire and keep it going, giving you a basis for the flames. Something to fall back on.

Then once you grow even stronger in your friendship, the flames start flickering. Flames being inside jokes, more communication. You trade phone numbers and Skypes, creating yet another link between you and them-adding more fuel to the fire, if you will. It becomes an unescapable friendship.

If we stick with the metaphor, we could say that Carly and I’s friendship is a bonfire. We met on a Harry Potter fansite, obviously giving us our first common interest-an ember-right there. Then sparks flew and flames flickered (I love cliches) as we learned more about each other. Once I got involved with a roleplay site on Tumblr, I told Carly about it because she’s a brilliant writer and I knew she would like it, at the very least. Then it quickly consumed our lives, in the best way possible, and we began to talk even more than we had before.

When I say Carly is my best friend, I say that in the strongest way possible. She could be my twin. My best friend is the person who I can always rely on to talk to when I need to. She can finish my sentences, we know each other that well, and I don’t go a day without seeing something or wanting to say something that only Carly would understand. It genuinely hurts, not having the capabilities to see her in person, and hug her forever. You might argue that Carly could be a random old guy pretending to be a 15 year old girl. And if that’s true, then she’s a damn brilliant actor (already is, but not in that sense) and I’m shocked. Congrats, Carly, if that is your real name. ;D There’s something that just tells me she’s not, though. When we do meet, and mark my words, we will, it will be amazing. Because we already know each other so well, it’ll just be as if somewhere in the hospital, we got separated. And our reunion will be absolutely joyful.

I love Carly so much, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Do you have any best friends on the interwebs?

“You think my name’s funny, do you?
No need to ask for yours. Red hair and a hand-me-down robe. You must be a Weasley!”
